‘The Lion King’ tops box office with $185 Million debut
The Lion King shattered some box office records. Remake of the animated classic brought in massive $185 million from 4,756 North American theaters during its first weekend of release. It has now surpassed the total gross for the same weekend last year all on its own. Disney’s The Lion King topped the weekend box office with a record debut of July.
Film left the previous record holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 ($169.1m) that was created back in 2011. The Lion King’s debut is the second biggest opening of the year so far just behind Avengers: Endgame ($357 million) and seventh biggest of all-time. Film made a debut in 4,725 locations which is also a record.
Film landed the best domestic launch for a PG film. The Lion King added another $269 million this weekend from overseas markets and that now stands at $346 million and a worldwide totaling $531 million.
