Ashes 2019: Jofra Archer called up to England squad, Stokes named vice-captain

England have announced their 14-men squad for the first Ashes Test. Pace sensation Jofra Archer earned his maiden call to the Test squad. They’ve named Ben Stokes, hero of the Cricket World Cup final as vice-captain of the team. Fast bowler Archer has not played Test cricket yet and could make his Test debut in Birmingham on 1 August.

Jos Buttler and all rounder Ben Stokes returned to the squad while Jack Leach, who was man of the match against Ireland at Lord’s and Lewis Gregory have missed out. Joe Denly and fast bowler Olly Stone have been added to the side.

The national selector Ed Smith: “Though it is unusual to select a squad of 14 for a home Test, there are compelling reasons to do so here,” he said in a statement. “Several bowlers are recovering from injuries or niggles. In addition, some bowlers who played in the World Cup are being closely monitored to assess their preparation for Test match cricket.

“The wider circumstances – a successful home World Cup campaign followed so quickly by a home Ashes series – are unprecedented. It feels sensible to select an expanded squad and leave a number of bowling options open for the final team selection.”

England’s squad for the first Ashes Test : Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, Jimmy Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes.
