Lasith Malinga to quit ODIs after first game against Bangladesh

Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga will quit ODI cricket after first match versus Bangladesh. He was added in Sri Lanka’s 22-member squad for the three ODIs against Bangladesh. But speaking to reporters on Monday, 22 July Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne indicated the former captain will make his last ODI appearance in the series.

Right arm fast bowler is Sri Lanka’s third-highest wicket-taker in One Day International cricket. He has 335 wickets from 225 matches just behind Chaminda Vaas (399) and Muttiah Muralitharan (523). Malinga is 10th on the overall list and needs three more wickets to leave Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble (337) behind. His last ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium will also provide him a chance to complete 50 ODI scalps at the venue.

Lasith Malinga is the only bowler to have three ODI hat-tricks, two of which came in World Cup matches. He took four wicket in a row against South Africa in Cricket World Cup 2007 in West Indies which is record for any bowler in ODI cricket. Malinga, who is known for his Slingy action, had picked up 13 wickets in his fourth and last Cricket World Cup.

Maling’s 4 for 43 at Headingley powered Sri Lanka to a 20-run win over current World Cup winners England and helped to keep his team’s semi-final hopes alive. He has 56 wickets from 29 matches. Lasith Malinga is the third-highest wicket-taker in World Cups just behind Glenn McGrath (71) and Muttiah Muralitharan (68).

He led Sri Lanka and helped them to lift ICC T20 World Cup’s trophy for the first time in 2014. He is expected to continue playing in the shortest form of the game till the next World Cup which will be played in Australia next year.
