Match Preview: Jofra Archer misses out from Ashes opener

England’s pace sensation Jofra Archer‘s much awaited Test debut will be deferred until the second Test of Ashes at Lord’s as England have named their XI for Edgbaston Test and he has been omitted from the Ashes opener due to his injury.

Archer was far from making a Test debut at Edgbaston though England have added him in the squad for the first Test against Australia. There is a good news for them as well as James Anderson, who is their all-time leading wicket taker will make his return. He will share the new ball with Stuart Broad. Chris Woakes will be the third bowler for Engalnd as they have trusted their senior campaigners over Olly Stone and Sam Curran.

One can’t overlook England’s impressvie record in Birmingham in recent times. Not just 11 victories at the venue across the formats since 2014 but they have been undefeated in Test matches since 2008. Their record at Edgbaston does not end there either as England have an even impressive record against Australia, they have been unbeaten in all formats since the Ashes 2001.

Mitchell Starc is likely to sit out for the first Test match at Edgbaston. Starc had taken 22 wickets in last Ashes in Australia. James Pattinson and Pat Cummins are confirmed for Birmingham game, while there will be a battle between Josh Hazlewood and Peter Siddle for the final spot.

Cameron Bancroft will be back as opening partner of David Warner, who will also make his comeback after a year long ban. Steven Smith will also be the returnee for Australia in Test cricket, he will bat at 4. Usman Khawaja will be no.3, that was confirmed by Australia’s coach Justin Langer.

The Ashes opener will also mark the start of the long-anticipated ICC World Test Championship.
