Cricket: West Indies recall Chris Gayle for ODIs against India
West Indies have included left hander Chris Gayle in the 14-member squad for the ODI series against India starting in Guyana on 8 August. They have left out Darren Bravo, Sunil Ambris, Ashley Nurse and Shannon Gabriel from the previous squad that played Cricket World Cup 2019.
Gayle is 12 runs short of Brian Lara‘s tally of 10,405 One Day Intertnational runs which is the most by a West Indian batsman. He will get the opportunity to break the record against India.
The dangerous Andre Russell could not find a place in the squad that will play against India. He is part of the T20I squad though. The opening batsman John Campbell who had scored 179 in a world record 365-run opening partnership with Shai Hope against Ireland in May, alongside Keemo Paul and Roston Chase have returned to the side.
Chris Gayle had announced his retirement after ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in February but the dangerous batsman changed his decision during the mega event. He is two matches short of 300 ODIs and on the verge of becoming West Indies’ highest runscorer in ODIs.
ODI squad: Jason Holder (capt), Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, John Campbell, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Carlos Brathwaite, Fabian Allen, Keemo Paul, Kemar Roach, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas
