Sri Lanka won the match by one wicket in a sea saw game in Colombo.
Wanindu Hasaranga has become the latest hero for Sri Lanka as he rescued his against West Indies to take his side over the line. Hasaranga stood tall with the tail enders and made unbeaten 42 to beat the tourists in the first of three ODIs.
The openers gave the hosts a solid start as they added 111 runs while chasing 290 which was set by West Indies. Both opening batsmen – Dimuth Karuneratne and Avisha Fernando – smoked half-centuries for their side. Dimuth’s team lost a couple of quick wickets to give the Windies a chance to make comeback.
Kusal Perera was looking good before getting caught by Darren Bravo off Keemo Paul Paul for 42 runs. Thisara Perera provided the hosts a 22-balls-32 to keep West Indies away from victory. But Wanindu kept the Islanders on track with tail and deny a win for the visitors who are winless in this format for over 14 years here.
Early, Shai Hope looked great and went on to score his 10th One Day century. Hope had to decided to use a review when he was given out second ball, the decision was overturned. He built a stand of 77 runs along with Darren Bravo before the later got run out for well compiled 39 runs and the right hander added 85 more runs with Roston Chase.
Chase scored 41 to take his side to a good position. Keemo Paul and Hayden Walsh’s quickfire 32 and 20, both were unbeaten, respectively took them to 289 runs in their 50 overs. Isuru Udana took 3 wickets for 82 runs for the hosts. Wanindu Hasaranga was named Man of the Match.
